Move from Free Google Apps to Gmail with Personal Email Domain Names

When Google announced that the Google Apps emails is not free anymore, it’s quite a problem for me. But i always think that, even if i need extra emails after used 10 free emails, i can still just pay extra for each new emails, but the 10 previous emails still free. But unfortunately, when i activate the business google apps, it says that i will be charged USD50/year for each emails, included the previous 10 emails that was free, will not anymore be free. Wow!

So i come up with an alternative way. Honestly, i am quite satisfied with Gmail services. Instead of using Mail App on Mac, or Outlook on Windows, i prefer to use Email service that is cloud, such as Yahoo or Gmail, but i prefer Gmail.

CREATE NEW GMAIL ACCOUNT

You will need to create new gmail account, i suggest if your old email is like This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it , then you can create email like This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

BACK UP

First, after using Google Apps for some years, of course you will need to keep the old emails. Most might not important, but you never know, so how to back up? This is the first problem i had. The key is to use POP3.

So go to :

  • SETTINGS
  • ACCOUNTS (TAB)
  • SEND MAIL AS - I’m not sure if this is necessary, but i think this is to validate that you also own the other email. So here you will need to “ADD ANOTHER EMAIL ADDRESS YOU OWN”, Fill in your new email address there, NEXT STEP, then SEND THROUGH GMAIL. Then validate from your other email.

Now you can go to your new email account, go to settings, and do the same steps as mentioned above. Now with extra steps.

CHECK MAIL FROM OTHER ACCOUNTS (USING POP3) - Here go add your old Google Apps email. With pop.gmail.com and Port 995, and always use SSL. Then ADD ACCOUNT. This step will help to copy all old emails from your old google apps email to your new email. It will takes few times, maybe few minutes or few hours, depends on how many emails you have on your old google apps email. Make sure you already copy all your old email to new email.

OWNERSHIP

You will need to validate that you own your This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . So from your new email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it go to SETTINGS > ACCOUNTS (TAB) > SEND MAIL AS > Add your This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it > Verify from your This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it (which still google apps) > Then you can make This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to be your default > MAKE DEFAULT

If you skip this step, you might need to create email from your CPANEL, WEBMAIL ACCOUNT, then verify from there.

DELETE GOOGLE APPS

After you are sure that you already have your old email to new email, go to your Google Apps ACCOUNT setting, then go to DATA TOOLS (TAB), then DELETE ACCOUNT AND DATA. You can also skip this step of deleting google apps account, but to keep it neat, let’s just delete it.

CPANEL & WEBMAIL

Now go to your CPANEL. What we need to do is to create a forwarder. At first, i thought i need to create new email account from CPANEL, but then i realize, i don’t need to create email accounts such as This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . I just need to go to FORWARDER then create forwarders there such as send email which goes to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . This way, i will keep my hosting space clear, without bother with email spaces.

By far, i think the steps above is enough for you to move from Free Google Apps, to Gmail but still use your personal email domain. These steps quite complicated, but i think this is the best way to move from Free Google Apps to Gmail but still keep your personal email domain.
